About National Study Academy

A neighborhood tutoring center in Oxnard with a statewide online reach. Founded by John Kim to give Ventura County families the kind of tutoring he wished he had growing up: patient, subject-deep, and consistent.

Why the academy exists

National Study Academy started with a simple observation. Every family John Kim spoke with wanted the same thing for their student, and it was hard to find. They wanted a tutor who knew the subject cold, was patient enough to sit with a struggling week, and stayed the same tutor month after month. Consistency, subject depth, and patience. Nothing exotic, but hard to source together.

The academy was built in Oxnard for families in Ventura County who wanted that combination. We opened with in-person tutoring for local families, then extended online to reach students across California. The mission has stayed the same since day one: match every student with a specialist, keep that specialist for the long run, and make real progress the only measure that matters.

Founder: John Kim

John Kim founded National Study Academy after years of tutoring students privately across Ventura County. What he saw again and again was the same problem. Bright, motivated students were falling behind not because they could not do the work, but because they were being taught by generalists rather than specialists, or by tutors who cycled in and out. Sessions were sporadic. There was no plan.

The academy is his answer. Every tutor is selected by subject. Every family gets a plan. Every session has a written note that goes to the parents. John is still directly involved in the tutor selection process for every new student, and he stays in regular contact with families through the school year.

Our tutoring philosophy

We work from a small number of ideas that shape everything we do:

  • Consistency of tutor matters more than anything else. The same tutor, week after week, is what makes progress compound.
  • Specialists teach better than generalists. A tutor who has taken calculus to the highest level will teach it differently than one who last saw it in high school.
  • Patience is the point. If a student needs three explanations of the same idea, they get three. No shame, no rush.
  • Sessions target real work. We teach what your student is being taught this week, or what will be on the coming exam. Not generic exercises out of a workbook.
  • Parents get honest reads. If progress is slower than we hoped, or if a plan needs to change, we say so.

Our tutors

Every tutor at National Study Academy is a subject specialist. The math and science tutors typically have STEM degrees from four-year universities and have taught or tutored their subjects for years. The humanities tutors are strong writers and readers who can teach both craft and content. The AP and test prep specialists have direct experience with the exams they teach, including recent high scores, and they know the current formats cold.

Every new tutor goes through a subject knowledge screen, a mock session with our team, and a probationary period with real students before joining the full roster. We hire slowly because tutor quality is the whole game.

Where we work

Our academy is based in Oxnard, and most local families attend in person. Families across greater Ventura County drive in from Ventura, Camarillo, Port Hueneme, Thousand Oaks, and beyond. For students outside easy driving distance, or for families who prefer the flexibility, we offer the same tutoring online across the state of California. In-person and online sessions run to the same standard and, in most cases, with the same tutors.

The way we work with families

Every family starts with a free consultation. We ask about the student, look at recent work, and talk about the goal for the year. If it makes sense, we run a short diagnostic before matching a tutor. Once matched, sessions run weekly, at drop-in cadence, or as part of a bootcamp schedule, depending on what the student needs. Written notes go home after every session. Regular parent check-ins keep everyone aligned.
